Discover the lingering color, crisp weather, cozy cabins, lower rates, and slower pace that make late fall one of our favorite times to experience Vermont.
Every fall, travelers try to answer the same question: When will Vermont hit peak foliage?
They watch foliage maps, compare dates, book months in advance, and hope their visit lands during that elusive window when seemingly every hillside turns red, orange, and gold at once.
We understand the appeal. Peak foliage in Vermont really is spectacular.
But here’s a little secret from those of us who live here: fall doesn’t suddenly stop being beautiful when peak foliage ends.
In fact, some of our favorite fall days come afterward.
You Don’t Have to Catch Peak to Catch Fall
Late October and November bring a different kind of beauty to Northern Vermont.
There may be more leaves crunching beneath your boots and fewer clinging to the trees, but that doesn’t mean all the color disappears. Pockets of gold, rust, and deep orange can linger as the landscape gradually transitions toward winter. Evergreens stand out against the mountainsides, fallen leaves blanket the trails, and the air has that unmistakable crispness that makes you want to pull on a sweater and head outside.

As fall inches toward winter, you might even wake up to the season’s first dusting of snow.
For travelers who love Vermont but don’t love traffic, crowds, packed restaurants, or vacations scheduled down to the minute, the weeks after peak might actually be the better time to visit.
Welcome to Vermont’s Quiet Season
Once the foliage crowds head home, Northern Vermont begins to slow down.
Roads are easier to navigate. Lines get shorter. Restaurant reservations can be easier to find. Lodging rates come down from peak-season highs, and spontaneous getaways become a little easier to pull off.
This is the season for travelers who don’t need a packed itinerary to have a great vacation.
At Sterling Ridge, that might mean making breakfast in your cabin before taking a morning walk on our private trails. Spend the afternoon at The Spa at Sterling Ridge or finally finish the book you packed. Go out for dinner in Jeffersonville—or stay in and cook.
Even the earlier sunset feels different here. Head back to the cabin, start a fire, pour a glass of wine or cup of tea, and settle in for the night.
During Vermont’s quiet season, relaxing is the itinerary.
Your Own Cabin in the Vermont Woods
Where you stay is part of the experience.
Instead of returning to a traditional hotel room at the end of the day, Sterling Ridge offers private, standalone log cabins and homes tucked throughout our wooded resort property. You’ll have your own kitchen and living space, along with the privacy of a cabin and the amenities of a resort.

There’s an option for nearly every kind of getaway. Studio cabins make cozy retreats for solo travelers, while our one-bedroom cabins are perfect for two. Families and groups of friends can spread out in larger cabins and multi-bedroom homes.
Quiet season is also a great opportunity to upgrade. Off-season rates can make an elevated stay at the A-Frame on the Ridge or Field & Stream even more tempting when you want the cabin itself to be one of the highlights of your trip.
Bringing your four-legged travel companion?
Select cabins and homes are dog-friendly, so your pup can enjoy Vermont with you.
Make Time for The Spa at Sterling Ridge
If there were ever a season made for a spa day, this is it.
Come in from the chilly Vermont air to the warm, inviting setting of The Spa at Sterling Ridge, our intimate boutique spa located right here at the resort.

Choose a custom massage, facial treatment, or full-body experience featuring high-end products and specialized techniques designed to leave you feeling relaxed, refreshed, and rejuvenated.
For couples, a side-by-side massage is a guest favorite and an especially nice addition to an anniversary, babymoon, or romantic weekend away.
Afterward, your cabin is only steps away. Take a nap, soak in the jetted tub, or spend the rest of the evening by the fire.
Stay In—and Make It Part of the Vacation
One of our favorite things about Sterling Ridge is that you don’t have to leave the resort to feel like you’ve gotten away.

Our baskets and bundles make a cabin day even easier. Start the morning with our Vermont Farm Breakfast Basket and top your pancakes with Vermont maple syrup. Planning dinner in? Add a Pasta Dinner Basket and skip the grocery store altogether.
For a little treat, our Hot Chocolate, Wine, and Beer Baskets are perfect for chilly evenings. Celebrating something special? Our Sweet Celebrations Champagne Bundle can add a little extra romance to your stay.
Walk the trails, visit the spa, cook together, play a game, read, or simply enjoy having nowhere you need to be. Sometimes staying in is the activity.
Or Head Out and Explore
There’s still plenty of things to do beyond the resort.
Before consistent snow arrives, late fall can offer opportunities for hiking, walking, and biking throughout Northern Vermont. Conditions can change quickly as winter approaches, so check the weather and trail conditions before heading out.
It’s also a great time to explore the area’s craft beverage scene. Boyden Valley Winery & Spirits is about 10 minutes away in Cambridge for locally produced wine and spirits, tastings, and scheduled tours. Smugglers’ Notch Distillery is only a few minutes from the resort in Jeffersonville.
Beer lovers can head toward Morrisville for Ten Bends Beer or north toward St. Albans for 14th Star Brewing Company.

And yes—you can still spend a day in Stowe.
Route 108 through Smugglers’ Notch closes seasonally once winter conditions arrive, but Stowe remains accessible by driving around the mountain. Spend the day browsing shops and restaurants, stop for cider and cider doughnuts at Cold Hollow Cider Mill, or make a longer Vermont road trip out of favorites like Cabot Creamery, Lake Champlain Chocolates, and Vermont Teddy Bear.
With fewer foliage travelers on the road, even getting there can feel a little more leisurely.
Stay a Little Longer
Lower seasonal rates and midweek availability can also make this a great time to turn a weekend away into a few extra days.
With resort amenities Wi-Fi, full kitchens, and your own private space, you can add a Sunday or Thursday night and work remotely if you need to. Answer a few emails in the morning, take your lunch break outside, and close the laptop when vacation officially begins.
Or skip the work altogether. We won’t judge.
A Reset Before the Holidays
By late November and December, the experience begins to shift again. The landscape moves toward winter, the chance of snow grows, and the holidays start approaching.
Before the shopping lists, parties, hosting, and travel take over, take a couple of days for yourself.
Come with your partner, your family, your dog—or just you.
There doesn’t have to be an occasion.
Sometimes a cabin in the Vermont woods is the occasion.
Come After the Crowds
Peak foliage will alw
ays be one of Vermont’s most spectacular seasons. But the weeks afterward have something of their own to offer.
Lower rates. Easier roads. Crisp fall weather. More spontaneity. And a little more room to simply enjoy being here.
It’s a time for travelers who would rather hear leaves crunching beneath their feet than sit in foliage traffic. For couples who don’t need ten activities planned in a day. For families who want uninterrupted time together. For solo travelers who need a reset.

You don’t have to catch peak to catch fall.
There may be fewer leaves on the trees, but you’ll have a little more of Vermont to yourself.
